Dry cough and hoarse voice: what should you know?

A common cold can inflame the upper airway and voice box, while acid reflux may irritate the throat without obvious heartburn. A hoarse voice is a common presentation of laryngeal irritation; coughing can then keep the tissues sensitive. Chronic cough, thyroid problems and less common conditions affecting the throat, lungs or thyroid can also be considered when symptoms linger, recur or occur with other changes.

Rest your voice, use a comfortable humid environment, sip fluids and avoid smoke, vaping and dusty air. Speak gently rather than whispering, which can strain the voice. If reflux seems relevant, avoid lying down soon after eating and notice whether spicy or acidic foods trigger symptoms. A pharmacist can advise on suitable symptom relief, especially if you take regular medicines or have a long-term condition.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, sudden swelling or coughing up blood. Arrange a clinical review if the hoarseness does not settle, the cough is worsening, or you have chest pain, unexplained weight loss, a neck lump, fever that persists or repeated episodes. Assessment may include listening to your chest and examining your throat and voice box.
