Dry cough and hives: what to know

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear and fade in different places. A dry cough may come from throat or airway irritation. Together they can occur after a food, medicine, insect sting, latex, or another trigger, and the reaction can become more serious if the throat or lungs are involved. Allergic Rhinitis may cause cough from nasal drainage, while a Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can cause cough with an unrelated rash. Asthma can cause cough and wheeze, but hives point toward an allergic process or another skin trigger. Acid Reflux, Bronchiolitis, Bronchiectasis, and Chronic Cough are other possible cough explanations, not conclusions from this pairing.

Stop exposure to a suspected trigger if you can do so safely and note what happened immediately beforehand. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and signs of a severe allergic reaction, use it according to your emergency plan and call emergency services. An antihistamine may help uncomplicated itching, but it does not replace emergency treatment for breathing or throat symptoms. Avoid trying a suspected food or medicine again until a clinician advises you.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat; hoarse voice; wheezing; difficulty breathing or swallowing; dizziness; fainting; confusion; or rapidly spreading hives. Sit or lie in a safe position while waiting and do not stay alone. Even if symptoms improve, arrange medical review after a suspected severe reaction so the trigger and future safety plan can be assessed.
