Dry and Oily Skin: What to Know

Short answer
Dry and oily skin can occur together when oil production and the skin barrier vary by area, while harsh cleansing or an underlying condition can intensify both sensations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Oilier central face with tighter or flaky outer areas
- Routine principle
- Cleanse gently and moisturise without scrubbing away oil
- Review needed
- Painful acne, scarring, persistent scale or sudden change
Why both can happen
The forehead, nose and chin may produce more sebum, while the cheeks or areas around the mouth feel tight or flaky. Weather, hot water, strong cleansers, acne products and frequent washing can remove protective lipids and provoke a dry feeling without reducing oil evenly. Hormonal shifts can also change sebum production.
Pimples, persistent redness, greasy scale or irritation may indicate Acne, Hormonal Acne or Seborrheic Dermatitis. Oily skin alone does not establish any of these diagnoses; the distribution, lesion type and response to care matter.
A balanced routine
Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, avoid abrasive scrubs, and use a lightweight non-comedogenic moisturiser on the whole face. Add hydration to tight areas rather than repeatedly stripping shine from the oily ones. Introduce one new product at a time and stop it if burning, swelling or a rash develops.
If breakouts are persistent, painful or scarring, a dermatologist can tailor treatment. Isotretinoin Treatment is reserved for selected cases and requires medical supervision; it is not a routine solution for ordinary shine or mild dryness.
When to seek care
Book a review for painful nodules, scarring, sudden widespread change, persistent peeling, or redness and scale around the nose, brows or ears. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering or rapidly spreading painful redness. A clinician can separate irritation from acne or dermatitis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which cleanser and moisturiser suit your skin, whether an active acne ingredient is worsening dryness, and whether the oily areas show signs of inflammation. Tell the clinician about hormonal changes, prescribed medicines, supplements and every product used on the affected areas.

Questions people ask
Should I skip moisturiser if my skin is oily?
No. A suitable lightweight moisturiser can support the dry areas and reduce irritation without adding heavy oil.
Can over-washing make combination skin worse?
Yes. Repeated harsh cleansing may increase tightness and irritation while leaving oil production uneven.
