Dry air and a stuffy nose: what to know

Short answer
Dry air can dry and irritate the nasal lining, making a stuffy nose feel worse; moisture, gentle saline care, and trigger control may help.

What a dry-air stuffy nose can mean
The inside of the nose normally uses a moist lining to warm and filter air. Heated or air-conditioned rooms, low humidity, dust, smoke, and strong fragrances can irritate that lining. It may swell or produce thicker mucus, so breathing through the nose becomes difficult. Dry air may be the main trigger, but a blocked nose can also occur with a common cold, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or chronic sinusitis. A blocked nose is not, by itself, proof of any one condition.
Ways to ease the blockage
Sip fluids regularly and consider a clean cool-mist humidifier if the room feels dry; follow its cleaning instructions carefully. A saline nasal spray or rinse can loosen thick mucus and soothe the lining. If using a rinse, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water as directed. Avoid smoke and scented sprays, and ventilate dusty rooms. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects into the nose. Decongestant sprays can cause rebound blockage when used for too long, so check the label or ask a pharmacist. If allergies seem to drive the symptoms, discuss Allergy Medication with a clinician or pharmacist.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if blockage keeps returning, lasts beyond a short illness, affects sleep, or comes with facial pressure, reduced smell, or thick discharge. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling around the eyes, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or heavy bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure. If one-sided blockage persists or follows an injury, have it examined.
