Sore throat in dry air

Dry indoor air can remove moisture from the throat lining, especially during sleep or mouth breathing. Smoke, dust and heavy voice use may add irritation. Allergic rhinitis can cause mucus to drain backward, while a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, glandular fever, strep throat or tonsillitis may cause a sore throat with other symptoms. Acid reflux may irritate the throat without a typical burning sensation. The pattern and accompanying symptoms matter more than dryness alone.

Sip water or warm fluids, use a clean humidifier if the room is dry, and avoid smoke and strong fragrances. Rest your voice, choose soft foods, and gargle with warm salt water if that is comfortable for you. Honey may soothe adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant. Wash hands and avoid sharing utensils when infection is possible. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief, particularly if you are pregnant, caring for a child or taking regular medicines.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided swelling, dehydration or rapidly worsening pain. Arrange a review for persistent symptoms, high fever, a rash, swollen neck glands, pus on the tonsils or repeated episodes. A clinician may assess your throat, hydration, exposure to infection and possible reflux; antibiotics are not useful for every sore throat.

Note when the soreness began and whether you have fever, cough, blocked nose, heartburn, swollen glands or trouble swallowing. Ask whether dryness is likely, whether testing is needed, and which treatment is safe with your health history.
