What should you know about drugs to treat hypotension?

Low blood pressure may be temporary, related to dehydration, caused by another illness or linked to a medicine. Some people have a low reading without troublesome symptoms, while others develop light-headedness, weakness or fainting when standing. Treatment therefore targets the reason for the low pressure rather than a reading alone.

A clinician may review medicines that lower blood pressure, check your pulse and blood pressure in different positions, and consider blood tests or other investigations. In selected ongoing cases, a prescription may help the body retain fluid or tighten blood vessels. These medicines can affect blood pressure when you are lying down and may alter salt or fluid balance, so monitoring matters.

Do not start a blood-pressure medicine, change its dose or stop another prescription without medical advice. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and attend follow-up checks. Rise slowly from bed or a chair, drink fluids if a clinician says this is suitable, and keep a record of symptoms, readings, meals and medicines. Compression garments, adjusted fluids or changes to an underlying treatment may be more useful than a pressure-raising drug. The right option depends on heart, kidney and endocrine health and on whether symptoms occur after standing.

Get urgent help if low blood pressure comes with fainting, chest discomfort, severe breathlessness, confusion, cold clammy skin, a fast irregular heartbeat or signs of serious bleeding.
