Drugs causing orthostatic hypotension

Orthostatic hypotension is a drop in blood pressure after moving from sitting or lying to standing. Possible medicine contributors include blood-pressure tablets, diuretics, nitrates, some medicines for Parkinson's disease, and some medicines used for anxiety, depression, sleep, or pain. The effect can be stronger with dehydration, illness, alcohol, heat, or prolonged bed rest. Light-headedness, blurred vision, weakness, or fainting may occur.

Rise in stages: sit on the edge of the bed, move your feet, then stand while holding a stable surface. Drink fluids unless a clinician has restricted them, avoid sudden position changes, and sit or lie down when symptoms start. Keep a list of every medicine and note when dizziness happens. Arrange a GP consultation for a medication review; the dose, timing, or treatment may need adjustment, but changes should be supervised.

Seek prompt medical advice after a faint, repeated near-fainting, a fall, or symptoms that are becoming more frequent. Get emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new irregular heartbeat, seizure-like movements, serious injury, or new weakness or speech difficulty. Do not drive while you feel at risk of fainting.
