What should you know about dribble rash?

Saliva repeatedly wets the skin around the mouth, chin, cheeks, or neck. Moisture, friction from wiping, and saliva enzymes can weaken the skin barrier, leaving redness, dryness, soreness, or small cracks. Teething, drooling during sleep, and feeding can increase exposure.

A rash in this area is not always simple irritation. Atopic Dermatitis can cause dry itchy skin; Contact Dermatitis may follow a product; and Intertrigo can develop where skin stays warm and damp. Crusting, ring-shaped scaling, intense itch, or a rash beyond the wet areas may point toward another condition such as Impetigo, Ringworm, or Scabies, which needs a different approach.

Pat rather than rub, rinse away saliva or food residue with lukewarm water, and apply a plain fragrance-free barrier ointment to intact skin. Use a soft bib or cloth and change it when damp. Avoid fragranced wipes, harsh cleansers, scrubbing, and trying several medicated creams at once.

If the rash keeps returning, note products, foods, drooling patterns, and whether heat makes it worse. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment when the skin is broken or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Arrange a review if the rash lasts despite gentle care, spreads away from saliva-wet areas, becomes very itchy, or develops cracks, oozing, yellow crusts, swelling, or pain. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, a rapidly spreading rash, or a child who seems unusually unwell or feverish.
