What should you know about doxy rash?

Doxycycline can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, causing redness or burning on exposed areas after ordinary outdoor exposure. A separate drug eruption may appear on areas that were covered as well. The appearance alone cannot show which explanation applies. Other causes include contact irritation, heat, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection, or scabies.

Contact the prescriber or a pharmacist promptly and describe when the rash began, where it is, and whether each dose or sun exposure changes it. Do not take an extra dose or restart a stopped course without advice. Protect exposed skin with clothing and shade, and avoid tanning. Keep a record of other medicines, supplements, and new skin products. A clinician may decide whether doxycycline should be continued, changed, or stopped.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, painful widespread redness, sores in the mouth or eyes, or a rapidly worsening rash. Fever or feeling very unwell alongside a new rash also needs urgent assessment. These signs can indicate a serious medicine reaction and should not be managed at home.
