What Should You Know About Donor Site Skin Graft Healing?

The donor site is the area from which a thin layer of skin was taken. It may feel raw, tight, itchy, or tender, especially when the dressing is changed. Healing depends on the graft depth, the size and location of the wound, your general health, and how well the dressing stays in place.

Early discomfort and a small amount of fluid on the dressing can occur. The area may look pink or red while new skin forms, then gradually change in colour and texture. It can remain sensitive to rubbing, clothing, heat, or sunlight after the surface has closed.

A donor site may heal differently from the grafted area, so the two wounds should not be judged by the same appearance. Keep follow-up appointments because the clinician may need to check the dressing, remove it at the planned time, or recommend a different covering.

Follow the dressing instructions exactly. Keep the covering clean and dry unless your surgical team has told you how to change or wet it. Do not pick at crusts, pull away stuck material, or apply creams, antiseptics, oils, or home remedies without checking first.

Wear loose clothing that does not rub the site, and avoid swimming or strenuous activity until you have been cleared. Take prescribed pain relief as directed. Once the wound has fully closed, ask whether moisturising, scar care, and sun protection are suitable for that area.

Contact your surgical team promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading, swelling is increasing, or the wound develops thick drainage, an unpleasant smell, or bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure. A fever, feeling markedly unwell, or a dressing that becomes soaked also needs advice.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain with rapidly increasing swelling, faintness, or difficulty breathing. Do not wait for a routine review when a wound changes quickly.

Ask which dressing to use, when it should be changed, how to manage bathing, and which activities could disturb the site. You can also ask how to recognise infection, when the wound should be reviewed, and when scar or pigment care can begin.
