What should you know about a donor site for a skin graft?

During a skin graft, a surgeon removes skin from one body area and places it over a wound elsewhere. The donor site may be closed with stitches or covered with a dressing while it heals as a surface wound. Its location depends on the size and type of graft, skin quality, and how easily the area can be protected.

Tenderness, tightness, mild swelling, oozing, and changes in colour can occur during healing. The donor site and graft site are separate wounds, so each may have different dressings and instructions.

Keep the dressing in place and dry for the period given by the surgical team. Do not pull off adherent material or apply creams, antiseptics, powders, or home remedies unless they were recommended. Wash your hands before touching nearby skin, avoid friction and stretching, and protect the area from sun once the wound has closed. Attend dressing changes so the team can check both sites.

Contact the surgical team promptly if pain is increasing rather than settling, bleeding soaks the dressing, the wound opens, or the area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or foul-smelling. Fever, pus, or feeling unusually unwell also needs medical advice. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these changes are significant.

Ask where the donor site will be, what dressing it needs, when it may get wet, how to manage discomfort, and which activities could pull the wound. Ask how scarring or colour change may evolve and whether later options such as fractional laser treatment could be considered after healing.
