DOMS from working out: why muscles hurt later

Short answer
DOMS from working out is delayed muscle tenderness after unfamiliar effort; use gentle activity and rebuild exercise as comfort returns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why soreness appears later
DOMS can follow a workout that is heavier, longer, faster, or simply different from your usual routine. Stiffness and aching may be most noticeable when the muscles lengthen or contract, such as when walking downstairs after leg training. The delayed pattern distinguishes it from pain that starts suddenly during exercise. Muscle Soreness After Exercise gives related symptom information, while Muscle Strain describes a different injury pattern.
A sensible recovery plan
Choose easy walking, cycling, or mobility work if it feels comfortable. Reduce resistance and volume, and train a different area if the sore muscles cannot move normally. Do not force deep stretches or use pain to judge whether a workout is safe. Normal meals, fluids, sleep, and a gradual return can support recovery. Heat or cold may make movement more comfortable; see Hot and Cold Therapy. Sports Massage is another optional comfort measure when gentle pressure suits you.
Warning signs
Contact a clinician when pain is severe, one area is notably swollen or bruised, the limb feels weak or numb, or you cannot bear weight or use it normally. Get urgent care for dark urine, reduced urination, severe weakness, faintness, or breathing difficulty after strenuous exercise. A sudden snap or pop with immediate pain also deserves assessment.
Useful questions
Does the timing fit DOMS? What training can I do today? How can I change the workout that triggered this, and when should I be examined if symptoms do not settle?

Questions people ask
Is soreness after every workout necessary?
No. A workout can be effective without causing pronounced soreness, and repeated severe soreness may mean the load needs adjusting.
Can I train another body area?
Often yes, if the sore muscles are not needed for balance or support and the session remains comfortable.
