DOMS delayed onset muscle soreness treatment: what helps

Short answer
DOMS usually improves with gentle movement, rest from hard training, comfortable heat or cold, and gradual return to exercise.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What DOMS means
Delayed onset muscle soreness is tenderness and stiffness that appears after a new, intense, or unusually demanding workout. It commonly affects the muscles used during that session and may make stairs, sitting down, or lifting feel uncomfortable. DOMS is different from a sudden muscle strain, which often begins during the movement and may cause a sharper, localised pain. Compare your symptoms with the guidance on Muscle Soreness After Exercise and Muscle Strain.
Ways to ease it
Keep the sore area gently active with easy walking and relaxed range-of-motion movements. Pause heavy loading, sprinting, and another hard session for that muscle group until ordinary movement feels easier. Drink fluids normally, eat regular meals, and return in stages rather than testing the muscle at full effort. A warm shower or a wrapped cool pack may feel soothing; Hot and Cold Therapy explains these options. Light Sports Massage can be considered if pressure feels comfortable, but stop if it increases pain, bruising, or swelling.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment for severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, weakness, numbness, an inability to use the limb normally, or pain that followed a sudden pop or impact. Seek urgent help for very dark urine, much less urine than usual, faintness, breathing trouble, or rapidly increasing swelling. These features need assessment rather than self-treatment for routine DOMS.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a strain or another cause of pain rather than DOMS? Which activities are suitable while I recover? How should I rebuild training load, and what warning signs should prompt a review?
