What should you know if a dog with anti-rabies vaccination bit you?

A vaccination certificate can help a clinician judge the dog's rabies risk, but it cannot assess the wound or prove that no exposure occurred. The date, product, and record should be checked where possible. The dog's health and availability for official observation may also influence advice.

Rabies exposure is considered when saliva from an infected animal reaches broken skin or the eyes, mouth, or nose. A bite that does not break skin is different from a puncture or tear. Even a small wound can need cleaning and review because dog bites may damage deeper tissue or become infected.

Rinse and wash the wound with soap and running water as soon as possible. Apply gentle pressure with clean material if it is bleeding. Remove rings near a swelling finger, and do not glue, stitch, or tightly cover a deep bite at home.

Arrange prompt medical assessment and take the dog's vaccination details if available. The clinician may consider rabies post-exposure treatment, tetanus protection, antibiotics, examination of tendons or nerves, and a safe wound plan.
