Barking cough in adults: how to assess it

A sudden barking cough after choking or inhaling an object is different from a cough that began during a cold. Hoarseness and a scratchy throat suggest irritation around the voice box. Night cough, wheeze or exercise-related symptoms can occur with [Asthma](/conditions/asthma/). Heartburn, sour taste or cough after lying down can accompany [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/). Nasal blockage and throat clearing may point toward [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/). A cough producing frequent mucus needs a different assessment, including consideration of [Bronchiectasis](/conditions/bronchiectasis/). The barking sound is a description, not a diagnosis, and adults should not assume it has the same cause as a child's croup.

Note when the cough started and whether it is dry or brings up mucus. If possible, record the sound for a clinician, especially if it comes and goes. Sip water, avoid tobacco smoke and irritants, and allow your voice to rest. Do not use leftover antibiotics or prescribed inhalers belonging to another person. A clinician may check oxygen levels, listen for wheeze or stridor, examine the nose and throat, and review medicines such as those that can provoke cough. Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, noisy breathing while resting, difficulty swallowing saliva, swelling of the face or throat, blue or grey lips, or confusion. Seek same-day medical advice after choking, with chest pain, coughing blood, a rapidly worsening cough or a high fever. Arrange a routine appointment if the cough keeps returning, interrupts sleep, or does not show a clear trend toward improvement. A cough in someone with asthma or another lung condition may need earlier review.
