What should you know about dog acid reflux medicine?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the food pipe. Medicines may reduce acid production, neutralise acid or form a protective barrier, depending on the clinical plan. Reflux can be associated with a hiatus hernia, excess weight, certain medicines or meal-related pressure. Persistent cough, chest tightness, abdominal pain or difficulty sleeping can have other causes, so symptoms need context rather than self-diagnosis.

Take only a medicine recommended for you and follow its label or prescription directions. Do not share human medicines, change the dose or continue treatment indefinitely without review. Smaller meals, avoiding food close to bedtime and raising the head of the bed may reduce symptoms for some people. Keep a note of triggers, timing and response so the clinician can adjust the plan.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent chest pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, trouble swallowing or unexplained weight loss. Arrange a medical review when reflux keeps returning, interrupts sleep, causes ongoing cough or does not improve with the advised plan. Sudden breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment because it may not be reflux.
