Does whiplash cause neck pain?

Whiplash can strain muscles, ligaments, and other tissues when the head moves suddenly forward and backward, often during a vehicle collision. Neck pain may appear with stiffness, reduced movement, headache, shoulder discomfort, or tenderness. Symptoms can begin immediately or become noticeable later.

Having neck pain does not identify its cause by itself. The event, symptom pattern, examination, and any warning signs help a clinician decide whether whiplash fits and whether further assessment is needed.

Keep gently moving within comfortable limits rather than holding the neck rigid for long periods. Use work and rest positions that do not aggravate symptoms, and follow any exercise or pain-relief advice provided after assessment. After a collision, seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening neck pain, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe headache, confusion, fainting, or breathing or swallowing difficulty.

Ask whether your examination suggests whiplash, which movements are appropriate, when to return to driving or work, and which changes should prompt another assessment.
