Does ulcerative colitis cause abdominal pain?

Inflammation in the lining of the large bowel can cause cramping, tenderness, urgency, and discomfort before or during a bowel movement. Pain may occur with diarrhoea, mucus, blood in the stool, fatigue, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied fully. Symptoms can change during a flare and may settle when inflammation is controlled. Pain by itself does not diagnose ulcerative colitis; stomach infections, constipation, food intolerance, and other conditions can produce similar sensations.

Keep a brief record of where the pain is, how it feels, when it appears, and whether it relates to meals or bowel movements. Note stool changes, fever, bleeding, and medicines. Arrange a medical review for ongoing or recurring pain, especially if you have diarrhoea or blood in the stool. Use only treatments recommended for you, since some pain medicines can irritate the bowel or mask worsening symptoms.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, inability to drink, or heavy rectal bleeding. Fever with marked weakness also warrants prompt assessment. These features can signal dehydration, severe bowel inflammation, or another urgent abdominal problem.
