Does trigger finger cause finger stiffness?

Trigger finger affects the tendon and the pulley that guides it as a finger bends. Thickening or swelling can make the tendon move less smoothly, so stiffness may be worse after sleep, rest, or repeated gripping. The affected finger may feel sore at the palm, click during movement, or need help to straighten. Finger stiffness has other possible causes, so the pattern and examination matter.

Reduce activities that repeatedly forcefully grip or pinch, and keep the finger moving gently within a comfortable range. A clinician may suggest a splint, hand exercises, or another treatment after checking the tendon and joint. Do not force a locked finger straight, because that can increase pain and irritation.

Book an assessment if stiffness persists, interferes with work or sleep, or comes with repeated catching. Seek prompt care if the finger becomes stuck and cannot be gently moved, or if there is marked swelling, redness, warmth, or an injury.
