Does transvaginal ultrasound treat miscarriage?

The scan uses a slim probe in the vagina to create detailed images of the uterus and early pregnancy. It can help clinicians assess the pregnancy's location, development and heartbeat when visible, and check whether the uterus appears empty or contains remaining pregnancy tissue. A single scan may not answer every question when dates are uncertain or the pregnancy is very early.

After a confirmed miscarriage, care may involve waiting for the tissue to pass naturally, medicine, or a procedure to remove tissue. The suitable option depends on bleeding, symptoms, scan findings and your preferences. The scan guides that decision but does not cause the miscarriage to stop or reverse.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service for an assessment if you have bleeding or pain in early pregnancy. Use pads rather than tampons while bleeding so you can observe changes, and follow instructions about repeat scans or blood tests. Ask when to expect follow-up and what to do if bleeding continues.

Get urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, chills, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can indicate significant blood loss or infection and should not wait for a planned ultrasound.

Ask whether the scan confirms a miscarriage, whether tissue remains, and what follow-up is needed. Discuss expectant, medical and procedural care, pain relief, warning symptoms, and when it is medically reasonable to try for pregnancy again.
