Does transvaginal ultrasound treat womb cancer?

During the scan, a slim probe is placed in the vagina to create images of the womb, its lining, and nearby pelvic structures. The images can show features such as a thickened lining or a mass. They can help the clinical team decide whether further assessment is needed.

An ultrasound cannot confirm cancer by itself and cannot remove or destroy cancer cells. A sample of the womb lining may be needed for diagnosis. If cancer is confirmed, treatment is planned separately and may involve surgery, radiotherapy, medicines, or a combination based on the findings.

Ask why the scan has been recommended and whether you need to prepare beforehand. Tell the clinician about bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, or unusual discharge.
