Does transvaginal ultrasound treat ectopic pregnancy?

A small ultrasound probe placed in the vagina creates images of the uterus, fallopian tubes and nearby pelvic structures. Clinicians may use these images with pregnancy-hormone results and symptoms to work out where a pregnancy is developing. The scan may show a pregnancy inside the uterus, suggest a pregnancy outside it, or leave the location uncertain when the pregnancy is very early.

Treatment depends on the findings, your symptoms and your overall health. Options may include close monitoring, medicine that stops pregnancy tissue growing, or an operation. Ultrasound itself does not remove pregnancy tissue or stop its growth.

If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, arrange prompt medical assessment and follow the monitoring plan given to you. Keep appointments for repeat scans or blood tests if requested, and tell the clinician about pain, bleeding, dizziness or shoulder-tip discomfort. Do not wait for a scan appointment if symptoms suddenly worsen.

Seek emergency help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, or trouble breathing. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding and need immediate assessment, whether or not an ultrasound has already been performed.

Ask where the pregnancy appears to be, whether the location is definite, which repeat tests are needed, and which treatment options fit your findings. Ask what symptoms should prompt an emergency visit and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
