Does topical steroid treatment for vulval skin help with vaginal itching?

The vulva is the external genital skin; the vagina is the internal canal. Itching at the entrance or on external skin may come from dermatitis, lichen sclerosus, irritation, or another skin problem. Internal itching may relate to thrush, bacterial imbalance, an infection, dryness, or a product reaction. A steroid can calm inflammation but may worsen or mask an infection if used without the right diagnosis.

Creams and ointments are not interchangeable, and some products should not be inserted. The correct medicine, strength, site, and duration depend on the examination and suspected cause.

Arrange an assessment if itching persists, returns, or comes with discharge, odour, soreness, pain, or skin changes. Until then, wash gently with water or a recommended emollient, avoid scented products and douching, and wear breathable underwear. Use a prescribed steroid only on the area and for the schedule given; do not share it or apply it internally unless specifically instructed.

Seek prompt care for severe swelling, fever, pelvic pain, sores, blisters, bleeding, or pain when passing urine. A new lump, ulcer, colour change, or skin thickening also needs examination, particularly if it does not settle.
