Do topical retinoids treat keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris forms when keratin blocks hair follicles, creating small rough bumps commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. A retinoid can encourage more orderly shedding within the follicle and may improve the raised texture. It does not permanently remove the tendency to develop these bumps, and redness or dryness may make the area look more noticeable for a time.

Confirm the diagnosis if the bumps are painful, pus-filled, suddenly spreading, or unlike your usual pattern. If prescribed, use a thin layer at the recommended frequency and apply moisturiser regularly. Do not scrub aggressively, squeeze the bumps, or layer the retinoid with other irritating products without guidance. Gentle cleansing and short, lukewarm showers can help protect the skin barrier. Use sun protection on exposed areas, especially if redness or dark marks develop.

Book an assessment if the rash is very itchy, painful, inflamed, leaking fluid, or leaving scars, since another follicular condition may look similar. Contact a clinician if treatment causes severe burning, swelling, blistering, or persistent peeling rather than manageable dryness.
