Do topical retinoids treat dark elbows and knees?

Darkening in these areas can follow friction, dryness, thickened skin, inflammation, or another skin condition. A retinoid can increase the turnover of surface skin and may soften rough texture while uneven colour fades. It cannot remove the trigger, and improvement may be limited when the discolouration has a different cause. Strong products or frequent application can cause redness, peeling, burning, and post-inflammatory darkening, especially in deeper skin tones.

If a retinoid is recommended, apply a thin layer to completely dry skin as directed, begin gently, and use a plain moisturiser to reduce dryness. Avoid scrubbing, bleaching mixtures, and applying it to cracked or irritated skin. Reduce friction from tight clothing or rough surfaces, and protect exposed knees from sun because ultraviolet exposure can maintain uneven pigment. Stop and seek advice if marked swelling, blistering, or severe burning develops.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the colour change is new and rapidly worsening, feels thick or velvety, is itchy or painful, or appears in several body folds. Prompt care is also sensible when there are sores, bleeding, or a rash that does not settle. These features need an examination rather than self-treatment with a retinoid.
