Can topical retinoids treat comedonal acne?

Comedonal acne is driven mainly by blocked pores, producing open comedones such as blackheads and closed comedones such as whiteheads. Retinoids act inside the pore to make cell shedding more orderly, helping loosen existing plugs and reduce the conditions that create new ones. They are less suited as a sole answer when lesions are deeply tender, pus-filled, or leaving scars, because those features suggest inflammation that may need another approach.

Apply a thin layer across the affected area, not just to individual comedones, following the product or clinician’s instructions. Use it on dry skin and support the barrier with a gentle cleanser and moisturiser. Do not scrub, squeeze, or layer several exfoliating products in an attempt to clear pores faster. Sun protection is useful, particularly if marks remain after spots settle. Ask a clinician about use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Arrange a review if comedones become inflamed, painful, widespread, or associated with scarring, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Persistent cracking, intense burning, swelling, or blistering is a reason to seek advice about the product. A clinician can look for rosacea, folliculitis, or contact irritation when the appearance does not fit straightforward comedonal acne.
