Does tonsillitis cause difficulty swallowing?

Tonsillitis inflames the tissues at the back of the throat. Swelling can narrow the space around the tonsils, while irritation makes food, drinks and saliva uncomfortable to swallow. A sore throat, red or enlarged tonsils, fever, swollen neck glands and a muffled voice may occur as well.

Difficulty swallowing has other possible causes, including throat irritation, reflux and dental or mouth problems. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician may examine your throat and consider whether the illness seems viral or needs further assessment.

Sip cool or warm fluids and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Rest, avoid smoke and follow the label or a clinician's advice for suitable pain relief. Do not share cups or utensils while you are unwell, and wash your hands regularly.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, worsening or not settling, particularly when drinking is becoming difficult. Take any prescribed treatment exactly as directed; antibiotics are not useful for every cause of tonsillitis.

Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have trouble breathing, develop rapidly increasing throat swelling or cannot open your mouth normally. These signs can indicate a complication requiring prompt examination.
