Does thyroid function test treat goitre?

A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland. It can be linked with autoimmune thyroid disease, inflammation, nodules, iodine imbalance, or other thyroid changes. Test results can guide the next step, but they do not by themselves explain every lump or determine whether the enlargement needs treatment. A clinician may combine blood results with a neck examination, ultrasound, and sometimes a sample from a nodule.

If a goitre has been found, attend the recommended blood test and follow-up appointment. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, because some can affect thyroid results. Do not start iodine or thyroid medicine without medical advice. Treatment might involve monitoring, medicine for an identified hormone problem, or specialist management when the enlargement causes pressure, swallowing trouble, or breathing symptoms.

Seek urgent help if neck swelling rapidly increases, breathing becomes difficult, you cannot swallow saliva, or you develop severe noisy breathing. Arrange prompt review for a new or enlarging neck lump, persistent hoarseness, or a sensation of pressure in the throat.

Ask what your thyroid results show, what may be causing the enlargement, and whether you need ultrasound or specialist assessment. Clarify whether observation, medicine, or another treatment is appropriate, and which changes in swallowing, breathing, voice, or neck size should prompt contact.
