Does thymoma cause shortness of breath?

Breathlessness may occur during activity or while resting. You might also notice a dry cough, chest pressure, wheezing, trouble lying flat, or swelling around the face and neck if nearby structures are compressed. Thymoma can occur with immune-related conditions that cause muscle weakness, which may further affect breathing or swallowing. These symptoms have many other possible causes, including asthma, infection, heart disease, and blood clots.

Arrange medical review for new, persistent, or unexplained breathlessness. The clinician will consider how quickly it began, what triggers it, and whether chest symptoms or weakness are present. Testing may include an examination and chest imaging. Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and avoid exertion while waiting for help if breathing feels harder than usual.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or inability to speak in full sentences. Sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, or rapidly worsening facial or neck swelling also needs immediate assessment.

Ask whether the thymus or another chest structure could be contributing, which tests are suitable, and whether muscle weakness needs assessment. Describe your breathing at rest and with activity, your sleeping position, cough, chest discomfort, and any difficulty swallowing.
