Does throat cancer cause difficulty swallowing?

You may feel that food sticks in the throat, need extra sips to move food down, cough while eating, or avoid certain textures. Pain on swallowing, a persistent sore throat, a neck lump, unexplained weight loss, or changes in speech can occur alongside the problem. These symptoms also occur with infections, reflux, dental problems, and other non-cancerous conditions, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a clinical assessment if swallowing difficulty persists, returns, or is getting worse. A clinician may examine your mouth and throat, feel your neck, and decide whether an ear, nose and throat review or further tests are appropriate. Until then, choose foods that are easier to swallow, take small bites, and remain upright while eating. Do not force food if it repeatedly gets stuck.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva or fluids, are choking, have severe breathing difficulty, or develop rapidly increasing swelling in the neck or throat. Contact a clinician promptly for blood in saliva, repeated coughing during meals, or swallowing symptoms that are steadily worsening.

Ask what might be affecting your swallowing, whether your throat and neck need specialist examination, and which foods or drinks are safest while you wait. Tell the clinician when the difficulty began, whether solids or liquids are harder, and whether pain, voice change, or regurgitation occurs.
