Does targeted therapy treat bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer cells can carry different biological features. Targeted medicines are selected when testing finds a feature that the medicine can block, such as a growth signal or a marker involved in blood-vessel formation. The test may use tissue from a biopsy or an operation. Results help the oncology team decide whether a targeted medicine could be useful, whether it should be combined with chemotherapy or another treatment, and whether an alternative is more suitable. Targeted therapy can be used in different treatment settings, including cancer that cannot be removed with surgery or has returned.

Ask whether your tumour has had the relevant molecular tests and what each result means for your options. Share your medicines, allergies, bowel symptoms, blood-pressure history, and any previous treatment. Depending on the drug, care may involve tablets or an infusion, regular blood tests, and checks of blood pressure, skin, bowel function, or wound healing. Follow instructions about appointments and medicines carefully. Do not start, stop, or add supplements without checking with the oncology team.

Report severe or persistent diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, a new rash, mouth sores, fever, or signs of infection. Contact the team quickly for unusual bleeding, black stools, sudden swelling, or a rapidly rising blood pressure reading if you have been asked to monitor it. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness. Early advice can help manage side effects and decide whether treatment needs a pause or review.
