Does stroke cause weakness on one side?

A stroke can injure brain pathways that control movement. Weakness may appear in the face, arm, or leg on one side, making it hard to smile evenly, raise both arms, walk, grip an object, or keep balance. The change may be sudden and may occur with speech or vision problems.

Other problems, such as a trapped nerve, low blood sugar, migraine, or a joint injury, can also cause weakness. Sudden weakness cannot be safely sorted out at home, so treat it as an emergency until assessed.

Call emergency services immediately, note when the weakness began or when the person was last known well, and keep them in a safe position. Do not let them drive. Share their medicines and medical history with responders.

Do not offer food, drink, or tablets if swallowing is difficult or alertness is reduced. Do not wait for strength to return; symptoms that improve still need urgent evaluation.

Emergency help is required for sudden weakness on one side, especially with facial drooping, slurred speech, confusion, numbness, vision change, severe headache, dizziness, or trouble walking. Fast assessment may open access to time-sensitive care.

If weakness is gradual, persistent, or linked to an injury without emergency signs, arrange prompt medical review. A clinician can examine strength, sensation, reflexes, and coordination.

Which muscles and nerves are affected? Could the timing indicate a stroke or another cause? What tests are needed? Is it safe to walk or swallow, and which changes require an emergency call?
