Does spinal fusion treat degenerative disc disease?

Degenerative disc disease describes changes in a disc between the vertebrae. A damaged disc may lose height, become less flexible and contribute to pain, but scan findings do not always explain every back symptom. Fusion surgery removes or works around a painful disc space and joins nearby vertebrae so that segment no longer moves in the same way. It may be discussed when pain is well localised, daily function remains limited, and a spine specialist finds a matching structural problem. The operation is not a general cure for all back pain and may not help symptoms caused by another source.

A clinician may review your pain pattern, neurological examination, activity limits and imaging together. Before considering surgery, many people try guided exercise, physiotherapy, activity changes and suitable medicines. Ask what diagnosis is being treated and what improvement is realistic for pain, sitting, walking or work. If fusion is proposed, discuss the level involved, expected recovery, movement changes, alternatives and the possibility that some symptoms may remain. Seek urgent assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening weakness in a leg.
