Does soft tissue sarcoma cause new lump or swelling?

Soft Tissue Sarcoma may appear as a lump in muscle, fat, connective tissue, or another soft-tissue area. The swelling may be deep, firm, or difficult to move, and it may grow over time. Pain is not always present, especially early on; discomfort can develop when the mass presses on nerves, muscles, or nearby organs.

New lumps and swelling also commonly result from cysts, injuries, infections, benign growths, or other conditions. A physical examination helps determine whether imaging or tissue sampling is appropriate.

Arrange a medical appointment for a new, growing, persistent, deep, or unexplained lump. Note where it is, when it appeared, whether its size changes, and whether you have pain, numbness, weakness, reduced movement, or skin changes. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it, as this can irritate the area.

The clinician may examine the lump and request imaging. If a tissue sample is needed, the biopsy route should be planned by the team that would manage a suspected sarcoma.

Seek prompt care if the lump is growing quickly, becomes very painful, causes weakness or numbness, restricts movement, or produces skin breakdown or bleeding. Get urgent help for sudden severe swelling, loss of function, or breathing difficulty when the swelling is near the chest or neck.
