Does snapping hip syndrome cause hip clicking and snapping?

Short answer
Hip clicking and snapping is a very common presentation of snapping hip syndrome, although painless sounds can also have other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the sensation can mean
Most people with snapping hip syndrome notice a tendon or muscle shifting over a bony area during movement. The sound or feeling may occur at the front, side or back of the hip, depending on which tissue is involved. It can appear when walking, running, climbing stairs, standing up, or moving the leg through a wide arc. Internal snapping often involves a hip-flexor tendon at the front; external snapping may involve tissue moving over the outside of the hip. A painless snap is often less concerning than a snap accompanied by pain, catching, weakness or reduced movement.
What you can do
Notice which movement produces the sound and whether pain, stiffness or instability occurs at the same time. Temporarily reduce activities that repeatedly provoke symptoms, while keeping comfortable movement. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess hip strength, flexibility and movement control, then suggest exercises such as gradual strengthening and targeted stretching when appropriate. Do not force a painful stretch or repeatedly reproduce the snap to test it. Assessment is useful when symptoms persist, interfere with sport or walking, or follow an injury.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment after a fall or forceful injury, or if the hip becomes difficult to move or bear weight on. Seek urgent care for severe pain with a visibly deformed hip, new numbness or weakness in the leg, or fever with a hot, swollen joint. A painful click that locks the hip, causes repeated giving way, or steadily worsens also deserves a clinical review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure may be producing the snap, whether your examination suggests a tendon problem or an issue inside the joint, and which activities should be modified. You can also ask how long to try physiotherapy, what symptoms should trigger earlier review, and whether imaging is needed.

Questions people ask
Can snapping hip syndrome be painless?
Yes. Some people feel or hear a snap without pain, while others develop soreness or tightness around the hip.
Does every hip click mean snapping hip syndrome?
No. Hip sounds can have several explanations, so persistent pain, locking or reduced movement should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.
