Does shingles cause painful skin?

The virus affects a nerve and the skin supplied by that nerve. This can create pain in a narrow, one-sided band, followed by clusters of blisters. Clothing, bedding, or a gentle touch may feel uncomfortable when the skin is sensitised.

Painful skin has many possible causes, including injury, inflammation, burns, and other infections. Pain by itself cannot identify the cause; the distribution, skin changes, and other symptoms are useful clues for a clinician.

Protect the area from friction with loose, soft clothing and avoid scratching or applying irritating products. A cool compress may be soothing. Arrange prompt assessment for new one-sided skin pain, particularly if a rash or blisters appear, because treatment decisions can depend on timing. Record the affected area and any new symptoms.

Seek urgent help for pain or a rash near the eye or ear, eye pain, vision change, hearing change, facial weakness, confusion, severe headache, or marked weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, rapidly increasing pain, spreading blisters, or signs of infection such as pus and worsening redness.
