Does sepsis cause fever?

Fever is a rise in body temperature as the immune system responds to a trigger, often an infection. In sepsis, the response to infection affects the body more widely, and fever may occur with chills, rapid breathing, fast heartbeat, confusion, weakness, or a marked decline in function.

Fever can also result from many infections and non-infectious conditions. The reading on a thermometer matters less than the person's overall condition, the speed of change, and whether there are signs that organs or circulation are being affected.

Measure temperature with a reliable thermometer if possible and note the time and other symptoms. Encourage rest and appropriate fluids if the person is alert and can swallow. Contact a clinician promptly when fever accompanies a suspected infection, worsening weakness, breathing changes, or unusual drowsiness.

Call emergency services for confusion, difficulty waking, severe breathlessness, fainting, blue or mottled skin, cold extremities, very little urine, or rapid deterioration. Urgent review is also appropriate when a vulnerable person becomes acutely unwell, even if the fever seems modest.

Ask what may be causing the fever, whether an infection needs treatment, how to monitor the person at home, and which changes should trigger emergency care.
