Does seborrheic dermatitis cause flaky scalp?

Seborrheic dermatitis can speed up irritation and shedding in oil-rich scalp skin. Shed cells may fall as fine flakes, collect at the roots, or stick to an oily surface. The scalp may also itch, look red, or feel sore, and similar changes can appear near the hairline, eyebrows, or ears. Flaking alone does not identify the cause; dry skin, psoriasis, product reactions, and fungal conditions can have overlapping appearances.

Wash gently and avoid picking or scraping the flakes, since this can damage the skin. If a medicated shampoo is recommended, follow its label or clinician instructions, including how long it should stay on the scalp. Rinse well and avoid products that increase buildup or stinging. Tell a clinician about recent hair dye, new products, scalp treatments, or areas of hair loss, because these clues can change the assessment.

Arrange a review if flaking lasts despite a careful routine, forms thick plaques, causes bleeding, or is associated with hair loss or marked discomfort.
