Does sciatica cause hip pain?

Sciatic nerve irritation can send pain into areas supplied by related nerve roots, including the buttock and the outer or back part of the hip region. Nerve pain may burn, shoot, tingle, or change with sitting, bending, coughing, or leg movement. Pain from the hip joint itself is often felt in the groin or front of the thigh and may be linked to hip rotation, but symptoms can overlap. An examination helps separate these patterns.

Change position often and take gentle walks if they do not increase leg symptoms. Avoid lifting and twisting that clearly worsen the pain, while maintaining comfortable movement. Write down where the pain travels and which positions alter it. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess the spine, hip, strength, reflexes, sensation, and gait before recommending exercises or other care.

Get urgent help for new bladder or bowel difficulties, numbness around the saddle area, or rapidly increasing leg weakness. Seek prompt review after a significant fall, or when hip pain comes with fever, inability to bear weight, or a visibly shortened or rotated leg. Persistent pain that disrupts sleep or daily function also merits assessment.
