Does sciatica cause buttock pain?

Sciatica involves irritation or compression of a nerve root that contributes to the sciatic nerve. The resulting pain can be felt in the lower back, buttock, and sometimes farther down the leg. It may feel burning, shooting, electric, or deep and aching, and coughing, sneezing, sitting, or bending can aggravate it. Buttock pain has other possible causes, including muscles and hip structures, so its location alone cannot identify the source.

Keep gently active if movement is tolerable, taking short walks and changing position regularly rather than staying in bed. Avoid heavy lifting and twisting while symptoms are irritable. Heat or cold may feel soothing when used with a cloth barrier. A clinician or physiotherapist can check strength, sensation, spinal movement, and walking pattern, then suggest exercises that match the findings.

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or anus, or rapidly worsening weakness in a leg. Arrange prompt review for severe pain after trauma, fever with back pain, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that keep worsening or limit normal activities.

Ask whether the pattern fits nerve irritation, what activities may be aggravating it, and which movements are safe. Discuss whether you need a neurological examination, physiotherapy, or further testing based on your symptoms.
