Does scalp ringworm cause hair loss?

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair. It may produce itchy, scaly areas, short broken hairs, black dots where hairs have snapped, or smooth-looking patches with reduced density. Most people with Scalp Ringworm notice hair loss. The pattern can resemble other scalp conditions, so hair loss alone cannot identify its cause.

Prompt treatment matters because inflammation around follicles can become more severe. Hair often grows back after the infection settles, although the outlook depends on how much inflammation or scarring has developed.

Arrange an examination with a dermatologist or another qualified clinician if you notice patchy loss, scaling, itching, tenderness, or broken hairs. Diagnosis may involve looking closely at the scalp and, when needed, testing skin or hair material. Scalp ringworm generally needs prescription antifungal medicine taken by mouth; a medicated shampoo may help reduce spread but is not usually the only treatment.

Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, pillows, or towels until a clinician has advised you about reducing transmission. Household members and pets may also need assessment when exposure is possible.

Seek medical care promptly for rapidly enlarging patches, marked swelling, pus, fever, significant pain, or a soft tender lump on the scalp. These features can signal a stronger inflammatory reaction that needs timely treatment.
