Does scalp ringworm cause bald patches?

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair shafts. Inflamed skin may become scaly, itchy, tender, or swollen, while affected hairs can break close to the scalp and leave uneven areas. Some people develop dark dots, crusting, or a soft raised swelling. Patchy hair loss can also result from alopecia areata, inflammation, traction, or other conditions, so the appearance of a bald patch does not identify the cause by itself. A clinician may examine the scalp and hair and arrange testing.

Arrange medical assessment rather than treating suspected scalp ringworm with a skin cream alone. Scalp infection commonly requires an oral antifungal prescribed for the individual diagnosis. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, pillows, or towels, and wash these items regularly. Check close household contacts and pets with a clinician or veterinarian if infection is suspected, because spread can occur through contact. Avoid scratching irritated areas.

Seek prompt medical care for a painful boggy swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or tender swelling of the neck glands. Early treatment can reduce inflammation and help protect affected follicles. Arrange review if hair loss continues, the scalp becomes scarred, or treatment causes a new reaction.
