Does salpingectomy treat hydrosalpinx?

Hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube that has become blocked and filled with fluid, often after inflammation, infection or previous pelvic surgery. The tube may be removed when it is badly damaged, causing symptoms or affecting fertility treatment. Salpingectomy deals with the affected tube itself; it does not make that tube open again. Your clinician will consider whether the other tube is healthy, whether you have pelvic pain, the condition of your ovaries and whether pregnancy is being planned naturally or with assisted treatment.

Discuss the diagnosis with a gynaecologist or fertility specialist, using ultrasound or other imaging findings as a starting point. Ask whether the hydrosalpinx is on one side or both, whether the tube can be preserved, and how removal could affect your route to pregnancy. If surgery is advised, clarify the approach, recovery, possible effects on nearby structures and the follow-up plan. Treatment for an underlying infection, if present, is separate from removing the damaged tube.

Seek medical review for persistent pelvic pain, unusual discharge, fever or difficulty conceiving. Obtain urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or a positive pregnancy test with pain or dizziness. After surgery, report fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding or a red, draining wound to your care team.

What caused the hydrosalpinx, and is there active infection? Could the tube be repaired, or would removal be safer or more useful? How will treatment affect natural conception or assisted treatment, and what will recovery involve?
