Does salpingectomy treat ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the womb, most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot continue safely there. During a salpingectomy, a surgeon removes the affected tube and the ectopic pregnancy together. The operation may be performed through keyhole surgery or, when bleeding or other factors make that unsafe, through a larger incision. Whether the other tube can support future natural conception is assessed as part of the treatment plan. Some ectopic pregnancies are managed with medicine or close monitoring instead, so surgery is not automatically the right choice for every person.

Follow the urgent plan given by your maternity or gynaecology team. They may use ultrasound and pregnancy-hormone tests to clarify the pregnancy location and monitor changes. Ask which treatment is recommended, why, and how the remaining tube will be checked. After surgery, follow instructions about wound care, activity, follow-up blood tests and when it is medically appropriate to try for another pregnancy. Emotional support can also be useful after an ectopic pregnancy.

Get urgent medical help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, dizziness, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding or marked weakness during a possible or confirmed pregnancy. These can indicate internal bleeding. Contact your treating team promptly for worsening pain, fever, increasing wound redness or discharge after surgery.
