Does rotavirus infection cause diarrhoea?

Rotavirus spreads easily through contaminated hands and surfaces. Diarrhoea makes the body lose fluid and salts, while vomiting can make replacement harder. Young children, older adults, and people with health conditions may become dehydrated more quickly. Diarrhoea has several possible causes, so the symptom by itself does not confirm rotavirus.

Offer frequent small sips of an oral rehydration solution, following the product instructions. Continue breastfeeding or usual feeds when possible, and offer simple foods as appetite returns. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet or changing nappies, and clean contaminated surfaces. Avoid giving anti-diarrhoeal medicine to a child unless a clinician advises it.

Seek medical advice promptly if there are very few wet nappies or urinations, a dry mouth, no tears, unusual sleepiness, dizziness, blood in the stool, severe belly pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Immediate care is needed for marked weakness, confusion, or difficulty waking. Babies and frail adults should be assessed early when diarrhoea is significant.

Ask how much fluid to offer, whether an oral rehydration product is suitable, how to protect other household members, and which signs would mean the person needs assessment. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, and any underlying illness.
