Does ringworm cause skin rash?

Ringworm is a fungal infection rather than a worm. The rash may form a round or ring-shaped patch with a more active, scaly edge and clearer-looking skin toward the centre. It can itch, enlarge gradually, or appear as several patches. The appearance is not always a perfect ring, especially on the scalp, feet, groin, or areas with darker skin.

A rash alone cannot identify its cause. Eczema, contact irritation, psoriasis, and other infections can look similar. Scratching may break the skin and allow bacteria to enter, so an uncertain or spreading rash deserves an examination.

A clinician can examine the pattern and may test skin scale when the diagnosis is unclear. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, hair tools, or sports equipment until the cause is clear.

Use an antifungal treatment only as directed by a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid steroid cream on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician specifically advises it, because steroids can change the appearance and allow infection to spread.

Arrange medical review if the rash involves the scalp or nails, spreads despite treatment, returns repeatedly, or affects someone with reduced immunity. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing pain, pus, marked swelling, or redness spreading away from the rash.

Ask whether the pattern fits ringworm, whether a skin test is needed, how long treatment should continue, and how to reduce spread to household members or pets.
