Does radiotherapy treat soft tissue sarcoma?

Soft tissue sarcomas can arise in muscle, fat, connective tissue, blood vessels, or other supporting tissue. Radiotherapy is planned around the tumour’s location, size, grade, subtype, and relationship to important structures. Before surgery, it may help shrink or control a tumour in a way that supports removal. After surgery, it may treat the area where microscopic cancer cells could remain. If an operation is not possible, focused radiation may control a tumour or ease pain and pressure.

The decision is individual. Radiation can affect nearby skin, muscle, nerves, bowel, bladder, or other organs depending on the body region. The team balances local control with protection of healthy tissue.

Ask whether your sarcoma has been reviewed by a specialist team and what the pathology report shows. Discuss the purpose and timing of radiotherapy in relation to surgery, medicines, and rehabilitation. Tell the team about previous operations or radiation in the same region, implanted devices, wounds, and any change in movement or sensation.

During treatment, protect the treated skin as instructed, pace activity, and report increasing swelling, pain, wound problems, or reduced movement. Rehabilitation may help preserve function when the tumour is near a joint or muscle group.

Call your treatment team promptly for a wound that opens or drains, rapidly increasing swelling, new weakness, numbness, uncontrolled pain, or difficulty using the affected limb. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, sudden loss of function, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
