Does radiotherapy treat lung cancer?

Radiotherapy is planned from scans so beams can focus on the tumour while limiting exposure to nearby lung, heart, spinal cord, and other tissues. For some people it is used with an aim of controlling a tumour in the lung; for others it follows surgery or is combined with drug treatment. A focused course may also be used when surgery is not suitable. Radiotherapy can sometimes ease symptoms caused by a tumour, such as pain, coughing, or pressure, although the timing and benefit vary. The cancer type, tumour position, spread, breathing function, and previous treatment all influence the recommendation. Common effects can include tiredness, skin soreness, cough, or irritation in the swallowing tube.

Your team may arrange breathing tests, scans, and a planning appointment before treatment. Tell them about lung disease, implanted devices, medicines, and any difficulty swallowing. Keep follow-up appointments even if you feel well, because effects can develop after treatment. Ask how to manage cough, tiredness, appetite changes, and skin care. Report new or worsening breathlessness rather than assuming it is a normal treatment effect. Do not alter medicines or miss sessions without contacting the oncology team.

Get urgent help for sudden or severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, confusion, or coughing up more than a small amount of blood. Contact your treatment team promptly for fever, rapidly worsening cough, breathlessness at rest, or difficulty swallowing fluids. These signs can have causes other than radiotherapy and should be assessed quickly.
