Does radiotherapy treat brain tumour?

Radiotherapy may be recommended after surgery to treat cells that could remain, as the main local treatment when an operation is not possible, or for a tumour that has returned. Different approaches may cover a wider area or focus precisely on a small target. The choice depends on tumour type, size, position, scan findings and overall health.

Treatment is planned with detailed imaging and a fitted position to help the radiation reach the intended area. Effects can include tiredness, scalp irritation, headache or temporary swelling; the team will explain which symptoms need prompt attention.

Bring a list of medicines and tell the team about seizures, headaches, balance changes, previous treatment and any implanted device. Ask whether you need support with transport, rest or medicines during the treatment period.

Keep follow-up appointments and report new symptoms rather than waiting for the next scan. Your clinicians may use neurological checks and imaging to judge how the tumour and surrounding tissue are responding.

Seek urgent medical care for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than usual, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, loss of consciousness, or a severe and rapidly worsening headache with vomiting. Contact the oncology team promptly for new confusion, worsening balance or a marked change in vision.
