Does rabies post-exposure prophylaxis treat an animal bite?

Post-exposure prophylaxis is a medical response after contact with an animal that could carry rabies. It may include rabies vaccine and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin placed around the wound. The decision depends on the animal, the circumstances of the contact, the wound, and local public-health guidance.

The treatment is aimed at stopping rabies infection before illness develops. It is separate from care for cuts, crushed tissue, bleeding, tetanus risk, or bacterial infection caused by the bite.

Wash the wound immediately with plenty of soap and running water, then seek urgent medical assessment. Avoid sealing a deep wound yourself. Tell the clinician what animal was involved, whether it can be observed safely, where the exposure happened, and whether saliva touched broken skin, the eyes, or the mouth.

Get emergency help for heavy bleeding, a deep wound, numbness, loss of movement, a bite to the face or hand, or signs of severe allergic reaction. Do not wait for symptoms of rabies; once illness develops it is extremely serious. Prompt assessment is needed even when the wound looks small.

Ask whether your exposure needs vaccine, immunoglobulin, tetanus protection, antibiotics, wound closure, or follow-up with public-health services. Confirm when any further doses or review are due.
